Bass-ic Journey

What musical instrument did you first try learning? Could it be the piano for its iconic soft sound? Or the guitar because it is uncomplicated to learn? While other musical instruments are unique in their ways, I doubt the bass guitar was in your mind. After all, the bass guitar is underrated and underappreciated. While being in almost every band, it is not the most audible most of the time. Regardless, I believe the bass is necessary for a song to be complete. The bass guitar is essential to almost every music genre as the bass fills up the empty spaces in it.

There are two types of bass guitars: Acoustic and electric. I prefer electric as acoustic sounds are much more muted than their electric counterpart.

When January 17, 2023, arrived, I was with my brother watching the TV when my Mom called everybody for lunch. I recall we were eating chicken adobo when our dinner was quickly interrupted by someone outside our house; apparently, a package had just arrived. My Dad went outside to check the parcel. I remember him being thrilled as he brought the box inside our house. Initially, I thought it was a musical instrument extension like a capo or an AUX cable, considering he was buying multiple attachments then. Then, he opened the box and pulled a bass guitar out of the parcel. It was comparable to Paul McCartney’s Hofner bass. After all, my Dad admires The Beatles. When I first noticed the musical instrument, I believed it was another electric guitar. However, when he started playing the bass guitar, it had a much deeper pitch than an electric guitar.

It was then that I took an interest in learning music. Most notably, learning the bass guitar, of course. I later conversed with my friends Joshua Kyle, Marc Angelo, Jarred Monzel, Nathaniela Rein, and Phille Dwyane. We decided to form a band together. Since then, we practiced whenever we had meet-ups at Joshua’s place. Even though I was not their most promising member, playing with them significantly improved my performance.

Eventually, my dad chose to start a business. A rentable music studio, Tugtugtayo. He bought a drum kit, two new electric guitars, and a new red bass guitar. Although the new bass was for the establishment, I have been learning to play different songs. Surprisingly, learning the bass was basic. If my dad never considered buying the Hofner bass guitar, I doubt I would have found a better hobby.
